Shochugeiko

Summer practice: A training session at sunrise. Like the Kangeiko, the Shochugeiko is a training session lasting several days, held early in the morning. From 5.50 am, a singing bowl meditation marks the start of the Shochugeiko.

There is a special quality to these six days. Once the first step has been taken and the lingering tiredness overcome, an unexpected spiritual dimension can emerge. In the early hours, we are still less burdened and more relaxed, and the heart can open more easily.

Invitation

Being able to trust in a sense of physical security and well-being at all times of day has always been of great importance in the martial arts. I invite you – for one week – to begin your day with a quiet Aikido training session.

During the winter and summer retreats, the old bell from the Meiji Shrine (Tokyo) stands next to the mat. Early in the morning, it accompanies our meditation with a long-lasting – slightly pulsating – deep tone. Owing to its age and sacred history, the bell has acquired a ‘personal voice’, which gains character through its patina, scratches and a small dent – an acoustic wabi-sabi that helps us to be fully present in the moment.
