Gasshuku 2025/26

Gasshuku, 合宿, comes from the Confucian idea of education and refers to joint, in-depth learning and practice over a specific period of time. The two practice weeks - Kangeiko and Shochugeiko - are the most traditional and still the most practised Gasshukus in Japan's martial arts dojos.

6 days in winter and 6 days in summer

Jigorō Kanō, the founder of judo, reintroduced these two forgotten traditions in 1895 and 97. Inspired by Kanō, kangeiko and shochugeiko have established themselves - beyond judo - as annual practice rituals in kendo, karate and aikido dojos worldwide.

In Kanō's time, they were aimed at young people, started at 3 a.m. and lasted three or four hours. Today, Kangeiko, like Shochugeiko, is aimed at adults and is intended to provide a dense and unifying practice experience. For one week, people all over the world practise their martial art - early in the morning every day.
